How to use the Typing Speed Test

  1. Pick your window. 15, 30 or 60 seconds. Short bursts show your peak, the full minute is the fairer read on how you actually type.
  2. Just start. Click the words or tap on mobile and type. The clock begins the moment your first letter lands.
  3. Space between words. Right letters glow white, wrong ones flash red, extras sit in pink. Miss a word and it gets a red underline so you can see it later.
  4. Watch the numbers. WPM and accuracy update live. When time’s up you get your result and your best for that length.
  5. Reset and go again. Hit Restart or press Esc for a fresh set of words.

How the score is worked out

WPM follows the usual typing-test rule: every five correctly typed characters (including the space after a correct word) count as one word. Mistakes don’t add to your speed. Accuracy is simply the percentage of keys you pressed that were right, so fixing a typo still costs you a little.

The word list is everyday British English, with UK spellings such as colour, favourite, centre and organise.

Tips to type faster

  • Accuracy first. Speed arrives when you stop going back. Aim for 95% or better.
  • Read ahead. While you’re typing the current word, already be looking at the next one.
  • Use the home row. Rest your fingers on ASDF and JKL; and let each one handle its own keys.
  • Little and often. A few 60-second runs a day beat one long session a week.
